Scott burst onto the scene in 2004 by winning the European Tour's flagship event, The PGA Championship at Wentworth. He was one shot behind entering the Final, but shot a remarkable 64 to clinch the trophy by 2 shots from Angel Cabrera.
The field included such players as Ernie Els and Vijay Singh and this win gave Scott entry into the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and the British Open at Royal Troon, Scott finished the season on 23rd on the order of merit and was named Sir Henry Cotton rookie of the year. He also participated in the World Cup in Sevilla partnering Alistair Forsyth.
Scott represented his country at every level of Amateur golf before turning professional in 1996 spending his early career playing on the mini circuit before his first victory on the Challenge Tour in 2001. He Won again in 2003 which secured his place on the main tour for the following year.
Since his victory in 2004, Scott has been a regular on the European Tour.
