James turned professional in 2004 following a sparkling amateur career. He won the Faldo Junior Series in 2002, and in the same year, the Greek Amateur Championship.

In 2004, James won the English Amateur Championship and the Lytham Trophy, breaking the tournament record by 10 shots, 5 shots better than Tom Lehman's winning score in the 1996 British Open.

He represented England in the Eisenhower Trophy and won the St. Andrews Trophy, whilst playing for Great Britain and Ireland in 2004.

He secured his Tour Card in 2006, winning the Ecco Tour Championship with a course record 62 in the final round.

James played a full season on the European tour in 2007, compiling 2 top 5 finished and is currently completing on the Challenge Tour, with the aim of retaining his Tour Card for next season.
